Are supplements better than oily fish?

Oily fish is not only a great source of Omega-3 but contains other important nutrients too. There is no substitute for a healthy balanced diet, however with today’s hectic lifestyles we often need help to bridge nutritional gaps. In addition, some food sources such as oily fish don’t always pass the taste test with children and indeed adults. Many consumers are resistant to eating oily fish despite the likely benefit, one of the many reasons due to potential contamination of fish with pollutants and heavy metals.

In these instances supplementation with Equazen formulation can be an effective way of ensuring your intake of essential fatty acids.

What is the source of Equazen fish oils?

Equazen proudly offers unique Omega-3 with Omega-6 food supplements that use only the best ingredients, from carefully selected suppliers, and which are produced to the highest possible quality and hygiene standards.

Our docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is derived from DHA-rich fish, such as tuna, while our eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is sourced from anchovies, sardines and pilchards.

Equazen has Omega-3 and Omega-6 – why is that?

Omega-3 and Omega-6 are essential fatty acids that are vital for good health. These ‘good fats’ play a role in almost every cell in your body and make up around 30% of your brain.

As your body cannot produce essential fatty acids, they must come from your diet. Equazen is formulated in such a way that it contains a higher ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6. This is because the balance of these two essential fatty acids ensures that they work together in the most beneficial way.

  • Omega-3:

The unique Equazen formulation is made up of two of the most influential Omega-3s: The structural fatty acid Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and the functional fatty acid Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA).

  • Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA):

During the development of the brain, throughout pregnancy and (at least) in the first two years of life, structural fatty acids are particularly important. DHA makes up the building blocks of the brain, nervous system and eyes.

  • Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA):

Emerging research suggests that high EPA Omega-3 is extremely important as it helps in the transmission of messages between cells.

This is why Equazen products have been formulated with a higher ratio of the functional fatty acid EPA. Products include Equazen capsules, chews and liquid (citrus or vanilla).

  • Omega-6:

Not all Omega-6 is the same. Equazen products provide Omega-6 from Evening Primrose Oil which contains a large proportion of Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). GLA can act in much the same way as Omega-3 fatty acids and enhance their effects by exerting an anti-inflammatory action.

Why is the Equazen formulation based on a 3:1 ratio of EPA/DHA ?

We have taken care to ensure that our products meet the specific needs of different life stages. Certain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) can play either a predominantly structural or functional role in brain-health.

During the development of the brain throughout pregnancy and (at least) the first two years of life, structural fatty acids, Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) Omega-3 are particularly important.

The ratio of 3:1 refers to those products suitable for 3 years and over. After 3 years of age, the brain and eyes have fully developed and you need to ensure that all of the cells in your body are functioning and communicating efficiently.

The ratios of EPA to DHA (approximately 3:1) are complemented by the addition of GLA (EPA:DHA:GLA =9:3:1). This formulation has been used in scientific trials and has shown to benefit cognitive functions such as writing and spelling in children who had learning difficulties.

Are there any side effects from taking Equazen?

Our post-marketing experience together with other open studies and initiatives confirm the good tolerance of Equazen. When side effects do occur, they typically consist of minor gastrointestinal symptoms (such as abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain, reflux, nausea, wind), taste disturbance, or skin rash.

We would always suggest that you consult your healthcare professional before starting supplementation if you have any medical condition, are taking medication, have a known allergy, or have any other concerns.

All the oils in Equazen have been independently tested to ensure compliance with European and WHO regulations on purity.

Are there any interactions between Equazen and medication?

For specific answers regarding possible interactions with medication, you must speak to the healthcare professional that is responsible for your treatment and course of prescription.

However, patients with known hypersensitivity to fish or evening primrose or any Equazen excipients should not use Equazen products.

Why do I have to give/take the high intake of Equazen for twelve weeks?

If you are starting supplementation for the first time with Equazen, we suggest following the loading phase daily dose recommendations for the first twelve weeks as we assume that the body is not optimal in levels of essential fatty acids 1,2. This period “loading phase”, corresponds to the average time-period needed to build up the body's stores of these vital nutrients.

Biochemical changes in the brain can occur as rapidly as within 1 month. However, this period varies from one person to another and can also vary depending on diet. Likewise, after ceasing supplementation, the high levels of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) achieved following the loading phase will decline very rapidly to low concentrations in a matter of days. Therefore, we strongly advise to follow the 12-week loading phase to ensure appropriate PUFA stores are made.

The loading phase regime of Equazen was used all the way through the clinical studies conducted with Equazen, generating positive results on children with learning and behavioural difficulties as well as in mainstream children. For dosing instructions, please see section ‘Directions for use’.
