What is Bacopa monnieri?

Bacopa monnieri is a traditional Ayurvedic (Indian) medicinal herb which helps to support memory and learning.

The history of Bacopa monnieri use

Bacopa monnieri, also known as bacopa and brahmi, has a very long history of traditional use. It was cited in the religious, social and medical literature of India as long ago as around 1500 BC.

More recently, the government of India has recognised the benefits of Bacopa monnieri by releasing a postal stamp featuring the herb.

In its many mentions throughout history, Bacopa monnieri has been associated with a variety of health benefits - yet it’s the memory and learning effects that have attracted the most attention in the last few decades.

The specific standardised extract used by Flordis

Natural products can vary considerably depending on how they are produced. Flordis believes it’s the science behind growing, harvesting and processing that delivers the true health benefits of natural product. That’s why in the making of a Flordis product, careful attention is applied to plant species and growing methods through to cultivation and harvest, using precise processes to help produce consistent crops. This is continued with extracting and manufacturing of specific ingredients following a series of strict controls to help deliver a consistent product from one batch to the next.

The specific standardised Bacopa monnieri extract used by Flordis is known as CDRI 08. CDRI 08 is extracted and formulated using a standardised process. This individual and highly technical process ensures a consistent form and amount of Bacopa monnieri is used in every formulation - meaning each final product will contain the same high quality extract.

It is this specific product that is tested in clinical trials. And it’s the same product that you receive, which is one of the reasons you can feel good about its effectiveness. Flordis products follow processes where all of the steps involved in the growth and manufacture of the natural product are tightly controlled to reduce variability and to help ensure consistency.

How it works

Bacopa monnieri's actions in the body are multiple and complex.1,2,3,4 The available scientific evidence indicates that Bacopa monnieri is an effective and well tolerated herbal nootropic (a cognitive aid) with benefits for memory attention and learning retention.

The key actions of Bacopa monnieri include:

  • Support of brain processes that lead to memory formation and consolidation
  • Increasing and improvement of the connections between brain cells
  • Increasing levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin – a brain chemical that helps to regulate mood, nervousness and stress, learning and retention of memory
  • Adaptogenic effect – helping to normalise body functions and to strengthen systems comprised by stress, improving mental and physical performance

Also, due to its possible neuroprotective and antioxidant properties, Bacopa monnieri extract CDRI 08 may play a role in helping to both benefit and protect certain cognitive functions. Some research indicates that Bacopa monnieri extract CDRI 08 can have a calming effect - meaning it can potentially be useful at times when your mental performance and mental clarity are compromised by feelings of stress and anxiety.5

Key studies on CDRI 08

KeenMind® contains the specific standardised CDRI 08 extract which has more than 40 years of research supporting its benefits, conducted by the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) in India.

KeenMind was first researched in 1974 and is still the subject of ongoing research.

Results from clinical trials have suggested that CDRI 08 may:

  • Help maintain healthy cognitive function
  • Support mental clarity
  • Help improve working memory
  • Assist in learning retention
  • Assist with concentration / focus / keeping to tasks / attention span
  • Be beneficial during times of stress / mild anxiety

Further studies have been conducted at The Centre for Human Psychopharmacology at Swinburne University in Australia.5,6 In this research, CDRI 08 was linked with a positive effect on learning retention, memory and attention measures - with one double blind, placebo-controlled trial of 46 healthy adults finding that the extract significantly improved speed of visual information processing, learning rate and memory consolidation. The results also revealed that CDRI 08 can be beneficial when you’re feeling stressed or mildly anxious. This study also showed short-term effects on stress and mood by decreasing anxiety after taking CDR1 08.

Another trial conducted by the same research team showed that CDRI 08 decreased forgetfulness in 76 healthy mature adults after 90 days of treatment.6
